Remembering Bob

Bob Batterman (left)

Please join us for a tribute to Boris (Bob) Batterman’s life on Wednesday, June 22, 2011, starting at 1:00 p.m. at Robert Purcell Conference Center on the Cornell campus. The tribute will be part of the CHESS Annual Users Meeting.

Bob Batterman (August 25, 1930 - December 14, 2010) was one of the founders of the field of synchrotron radiation research and the founding director of the Cornell High Energy Synchrotron Source (CHESS), serving in this capacity for 19 years.

The afternoon session will begin with Don Bilderback chairing a special Batterman Tribute session to review his contributions to x-ray science including his favorite topics of dynamical diffraction, x-ray standing waves, the early days at CESR/CHESS and his being a pioneer in synchrotron radiation.

One of Bob’s legacies includes the many x-ray science leaders he has mentored, as well as his colleagues who are currently providing x-ray leadership at numerous home laboratory and synchrotron x-ray facilities throughout the world. We have contacted many of them and so far Neil Aschroft (Cornell, first CHESS co-PI), Mike Bedzyk (Northwestern and APS, Chicago), Lonny Berman (Brookhaven), Helmut Dosch (DESY), Jerry Hastings (Stanford), Gene Ice (ORNL), Gerd Materlik (Diamond), Denis McWhan (BNL), Dennis Mills (APS, Chicago), Sarvjit Shastri (APS, Chicago), Herman Winick (Stanford), Jorg Zegenhagen (Grenoble) are trying to make arrangements to attend. Most of them will share their experiences, memories and pictures of Bob as well as talk about the cutting edge of x-ray science that they are currently involved with, and will discuss where their x-ray field is headed.

The tribute will continue through the reception/dinner period at the Statler Hotel later in the evening. The reception starts at 6:15 p.m. to be followed by dinner at 7 p.m. Neil Ashcroft, the Horace White Professor of Physics, Emeritus, Cornell University, will be presenting an after-dinner talk in Bob’s honor and have the final word of the special Tribute Session.

Please note that although there is no cost to guests for the Tribute Session, there is a charge of $50 per person for those who plan to attend the dinner.
