AEP Graduate Student Kayla Nguyen awarded $15,000 “Use it!” Lemelson-MIT Prize

Kayla Nguyen, '18 was awarded the $15,000 2018 “Use it!” Lemelson-MIT Student Prize for her inventive work in helping to develop new electron microscopy techniques. She developed software, tested and demonstrated a new type of scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM) camera, called an Electron Microscope Pixel Array Detector (EMPAD). The EMPAD camera sensor was based on x-ray detector technology pioneered by the Gruner research group in the Physics department.
